Physical Therapy Cited as Treatment Option for TMJ Disorder

ProRehab Physical Therapy, which operates locations in Louisville and Southern Indiana, is highlighting physical therapy as a treatment approach for temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly known as TMJ or TMD. The condition affects more than 10 million people nationwide, according to the practice.

The clinic noted that treatment for TMD often involves addressing jaw mechanics, neck tension, and posture rather than relying solely on dental night guards. Common symptoms associated with the disorder include clicking or locking of the jaw, headaches at the base of the skull, pain during chewing or yawning, and neck stiffness accompanying jaw pain.

Physical therapy is among several treatment options available for TMD patients. Those experiencing symptoms can consult with a healthcare provider or physical therapist for evaluation.
